It's Halloween!
This is personally one of my favorite holidays. From the dressing up, funky makeup, scary movies, and of course the candy, there's hardly anything boring about it. It's all very exciting to see people dress up as their favorite characters or really, anything they want. Especially when there's cool makeup involved. For my trick or treaters, how many of you guys delve into a business trade with your friends over candy? Because I remember doing that and making high profits off of Hershey kisses (I really love Hershey kisses okay). As for anyone who gives out candy, you know you give extra candy to that one baby who looks the cutest in their costume. Don't lie. We all do it. Lets now turn this blog post into a little history lesson. Do any of you know about the origins of Halloween? Take a look at the title of this blog post; "All Hollows' Eve" is one of the fancy, traditional names for Halloween. Other variations are Hallowe'en, Allhalloween, and All Saints' Eve. Halloween originated many years ago, dating back to the Roman empire and other Celtic cultures across Europe. While we take joy from Halloween, the Romanians and Celts feared it; it was a frightening day for them because the spirits of the dead would descend down to the world of the living. Everyone took the holiday seriously, offering sacrifices for the spirits to appease them and creating masks in an effort to scare them off. That's why we wear costumes and creepy masks nowadays; it's also why we see those cheesy horror movies about ghosts haunting that one girl who decides to walk towards the loud noise she heard in the kitchen rather than away from it (-_-). Anyways, it's really significant that this pagan holiday, born so many years ago, is still alive and kickin' in our day (luckily without all the sacrifices and fear of spirits). Now to lighten the mood, are any of you guys excited for Halloween? Is anyone dressing up or going trick or treating? Let us know your plans for Halloween in the comments below!

It's been quite the journey, making t-shirts, advertising, getting local businesses to donate gift cards, and of course creating this amazing blog. But all the hard work paid off because the Hawk Writing Center officially opens today! Remember to come to our kick off party today, after school from 2:30 to 3:15 at the very center of where everything started: Ms. Passino's room, 2457 on the high school side. There'll be food, prizes, raffles, and you'll get to meet the tutors! Do you know what else today is? It's National Writing Day! Check out http://www.ncte.org/dayonwriting for more information. Be sure to take 2 minutes out of your time and stop by Ms. Passino's room to do a little writing exercise for us: what writing means to you. It doesn't even need to be a paragraph long, just something short and sweet. By doing this, you'll be celebrating Writing Day and helping to contribute to the Writing Center. Remember that the Writing Center will be open Monday-Thursday during 5th period (during ALL lunches as well) and Monday after school. More details about the Hawk Writing Center will be discussed in the kick off party, along with any questions you might have. We look forward to meeting you! On September 27th, some of our diligent tutors attended a Writing Center Conference at Thomas Edison High School. The CAPTA conference was aimed to connect local writing centers and increase their impact in the community. Presentations included various aspects of peer tutoring from tutor logs to tutoring elementary school students. Shout out to Hayfield Senior tutors- Dean, Mikie, Donna, and Zoe who gave presentations at the conference. This provided them an opportunity to practice their presentations for their upcoming conference in Orlando! One of the perks of Advanced Composition 2 :) As for the Hawk Writing Center, this is the second year that it has been operational, so we are the fledgling Writing Center in the area. (To compare, Edison's Center has been open for 6 years!) We are not intimidated, we have experienced firsthand how accepting Hayfield is! From all of us at the writing center- thank you, with your continued support we are preparing to expand outreach in the Hayfield Community! The Hawk Writing Center will be hosting a college essay workshop next Monday, October 6th. The workshop will be held in the Middle School Lecture Hall during SOAR (4th Period). For those interested, please sign up through Family Connection on Blackboard. It does not matter where in the writing process attendees are, there will be resources for everyone. We will give away bookmarks and helpful handouts you can hang on to, along with a stamp of participation that will bring you one step closer to getting a prize from our rewards card :) We hope to see many of Hayfield's super seniors there! However if you are unable to attend the attached document is the handout from the session.
Tutors: Please comment in spirit of title of the post. This is your opportunity to introduce yourselves to all perspective tutees. This response is open-ended so feel free to let your writing soar!
